THE outer edge of the Earth’s atmosphere, the ionosphere, is contracting at a rate of 1 kilometre every five years, says the British Antarctic Survey. Global warming is almost certainly to blame. The finding comes from an analysis of 600 000 measurements of the ionosphere’s height taken over the past 38 years using echo sounding ( Journal of Geophysical Research, vol 103, p 20 774).
