RNA can produce its own genetic building blocks, researchers have shown. Many biologists believe that in the early stages of the evolution of life the genetic blueprint was carried by RNA, a chemical cousin of the DNA that does the job now. If so, RNA would have had to create nucleotides—the building blocks from which it is made—by joining the sugar ribose to nucleic acid bases.
